Announcing German Subtitles on Courses

If you’re a native German speaker who is taking our courses over at Talk Python Training, we have excellent news for you. We now offer German transcripts and subtitles for our course videos.

They’re incredibly easy to enable. Just click the CC for closed captions in the player and switch your language to Deutsch.

That’s it! Now you’re enjoying closed captions in your language.

What if I don’t speak German?

If you don’t speak German, well, maybe these subtitles are not for you. But there are still some very cool updates to the website as well.

In the screenshot above, notice that there’s the ability to change the size of the subtitles for any language. Are they too small, making it hard to read as we go through the content? Make them larger. Subtitles covering the content you’re trying to follow along with? Make them smaller.

Plus, this is just the beginning of a long and fruitful journey. Now that we have our German subtitles completed, the next language we’ll be adding is Spanish. This will likely take several weeks and we’ll write about it here when it’s ready.

How good are they?

I’d love to hear back from a couple of native German speakers about how good the transcripts and subtitles actually are. I can tell you we put a tremendous amount of work into generating these and ensuring that they are idiomatic for German-speaking developers.

Not currently available in our mobile app

Updating our mobile app to support this functionality is, of course, possible, but it’s also a lot of work. For this initial rollout, our mobile app will only do English language transcripts, whereas the website player will do multilingual subtitles.

A huge investment in multilingual support

I’d like to just call out how much work went into making this happen. It’s easy to look at one course and think, oh, great, it has multilingual subtitles. Making the website support this improved transcript and subtitle experience was just the beginning. The volume of translations and corrections is immense.

At the time of writing, we have 13,750 different transcript files across 280 hours of audio. Think about that. Just listening to the audio playback takes almost two months of full-time work before we even talk about translations and corrections. I hope our German-speaking learners enjoy this, and that you’ll look forward to the additional languages coming soon. I’d love to hear your thoughts on it.
